Ohio Super Lawyers Selects Nearly 20 Percent of Walter Haverfield Attorneys
Ohio Super Lawyers, a prominent legal rating service that recognizes outstanding lawyers for their high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement, has selected twelve Walter Haverfield attorneys to its 2021 Ohio Super Lawyers list. It has also selected an additional six attorneys to its Ohio Rising Stars list, which honors candidates who are either 40 years old or younger or have been in practice for 10 years or less. The names of those honored are below.
Each year, no more than five percent of lawyers in the state are selected by the research team at Ohio Super Lawyers to receive recognition, and no more than 2.5 percent of lawyers in the state are recognized by the Ohio Rising Stars research team.
The annual selections for both Ohio Super Lawyers and Ohio Rising Stars are made using a multi-step process, which includes independent research, peer nominations and peer evaluations.

Two Walter Haverfield Attorneys Selected as “Lawyer of the Year” by Best Lawyers®
Best Lawyers®, a prominent worldwide attorney ranking publication, has recognized Todd Hunt and Christina Peer as “Lawyer of the Year” for its 2021 U.S. edition. Hunt and Peer are partners at Walter Haverfield.
“Lawyer of the Year” recognition is awarded to individual lawyers with the highest overall peer feedback during the Best Lawyers® research process. Only one lawyer is selected as “Lawyer of the Year” within a designated practice area and region.
More than 65,000 attorneys in 147 practice areas are recognized in the 2021 edition of Best Lawyers in America®. Individual selections are based on more than 8 million evaluations. At Walter Haverfield, nearly half of all of the firm’s attorneys are included in the latest edition.
Lawyer of the Year
Todd Hunt – Land Use and Zoning Law: Todd Hunt, partner at Walter Haverfield, has managed and tried a wide range of civil and administrative cases and counsels business owners, developers and public officials on related matters involving land use, zoning, entitlements, and development incentives. He has also successfully handled a variety of cases involving tort and civil rights, construction contracts, and general government authority issues. Hunt serves as special counsel to several cities, villages, townships, other governmental entities and taxing authorities throughout Ohio. Furthermore, he serves as general counsel for a Division I college sports conference and handles its transactional matters and multi-faceted litigation.
Christina Peer – Education Law: Christina Peer, chair of the Walter Haverfield Education Practice Group, provides counsel to boards of education on state and federal laws on a wide variety of topics including student discipline, employee grievances, employee discipline, student privacy, and the drafting and implementation of board policies. Peer also represents boards of education in employment-related matters such as defense of employment discrimination claims brought under Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, and other claims arising from terminations. Peer’s practice places a particular emphasis on counseling boards of education regarding issues related to the education of students with disabilities. In these matters, Peer assists school districts with the development of educational plans for students with disabilities and in resolving related disputes. She also represents school districts before the Ohio Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights.

Walter Haverfield’s Real Estate Team Recognized by Chambers USA
Chambers USA, an affiliate of Chambers and Partners, the world’s leading ranking service of top lawyers and law firms, has selected Walter Haverfield’s Real Estate Team to be ranked in its 2020 USA guide for Ohio. This is the first time the group has been recognized by Chambers, and Walter Haverfield is honored to have received this recognition.
The positive client feedback that Chambers USA received about the Walter Haverfield Real Estate team was the driving factor to achieving the ranking. Testimonials published by Chambers on its website state that the team is “a good group of lawyers,” who “really know what they are doing.”

Walter Haverfield is the recipient of two awards from the Cleveland chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), which recognizes outstanding work in marketing communications each year. The firm’s education law attorneys received a gold Cleveland Rocks award for its podcast series titled, “Class Act: Updates in Education Law.” The organization also recognized the firm for its integrated communications efforts. Rocks awards are based on research, planning, execution and evaluation of public relations and communications projects and programs.

At the 2015 Annual Meeting of the Federation of Defense and Corporate Counsel (FDCC), held in Banff, Alberta, Canada, Craig A. Marvinney received the Annual FDCC Connect Award, which recognizes that member whose work best furthers the FDCC attorney referral network. At the same meeting, Craig was also elected to serve as a member of the FDCC’s Board of Directors for 2015-16.
The FDCC, with approximately 1400 members, is comprised of recognized leaders in the legal community. It is tasked with promoting the knowledge, fellowship, and professionalism of its members as they advocate for a balanced justice system and represent those who need a defense in civil lawsuits.

Geoffrey S. Goss was named President of the University Settlement Board of Directors. University Settlement is a neighborhood center which provides social services to residents of southeast Cleveland’s Broadway-Slavic Village neighborhood.

Darrell A. Clay was recently selected as Vice President of the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association, effective July 1, 2015. Under the Bar Association’s automatic plan of succession, he will serve a one-year term as Vice President and another as President-Elect, prior to assuming the office of President on July 1, 2017.
Darrell was also appointed by the Supreme Court of Ohio to its Board of Commissioners on Character and Fitness, for a three-year term commencing on January 1, 2015.

On December 22, 2014, Craig A. Marvinney was re-appointed to the United States District Court (Northern District of Ohio) Alternative Dispute Resolution Panel for an eighth three-year term. This, despite the fact that the Court has cut the Panel membership by nearly two-thirds. Craig has been a member of the Panel since its inception in 1993. The Panel aids the Court’s judges in reducing case loads and speeding case resolution, where members are – among other roles – mediators, arbitrators, and early neutral evaluators.
